Some Ben Hogan forged APEX Irons History Throughout all its iterations dating back to 1953, the Ben Hogan Company has had its good days and its bad days. There have been major championships and changes in ownership, along with comebacks, setbacks, mothballing, bankrolling, shutdowns and other showdowns. Love it or hate it, it’s the brand that simply refuses to die. The very first Hogan Apex iron was introduced in 1972 and became one of the most successful irons in Hogan's history.
The first ever Apex iron made - a true forged blade iron set produced by the Ben Hogan company in ft. Worth, Texas. Overview Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, brought the same focus he had on the course to his Ben Hogan Golf Company. Dissatisfied with the quality of equipment that was manufactured at the time, he was determined to "make the best golf clubs in the world" by using "the most exacting tolerances modern machinery would allow." The Ben Hogan Golf Company became renowned for its blade irons, in particular, which are considered to be the epitome of irons for golf purists. Early Years Ben Hogan Golf was founded in 1953 by Hogan and two friends. It was an auspicious year to start the company, since Hogan won five out of six tournaments in 1953, including the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open. As Golfio says, "Ben Hogan Golf has always stood for exceptional golf equipment." In 1968, Hogan teamed up with his designers to produce the Apex shaft, which was softer in the long irons and firmer in the short irons and considered by many to be the most consistent shaft in the game. Apex Irons The first Apex iron set was introduced in 1972. It was a compact blade with a thick muscle back, designed for the best players. The Apex was slightly redesigned a number of times in the 1970 and 1980’s, but the basic concept was the same -- to create a set of irons with the best feel and playability. In those years, the Apex was almost useless to higher handicappers, since the blade had a small sweet spot and no forgiveness was built in for mishits. Later Years Ben Hogan Golf changed hands a number of times. It was sold to Spalding in 1997 and to Callaway in 2003. In 1999, the Apex Plus was introduced, a blade forged from 1030 carbon steel. In 2001, the Ben Hogan name was finally put on an oversized club with a cavity back, an iron made with the middle to high handicapper in mind. Hogan who died in 1997, may have spun in his grave at the thought of his name being stamped on clubs designed for weekend duffers. Modern Development In 2003, the year that Callaway purchased Ben Hogan Golf, Jim Furyk won the U.S. Open with a set of Hogan irons. A fiftieth-year anniversary set of Apex irons, a limited edition of 1,953 sets, was released to commemorate the founding of Ben Hogan Golf. But Callaway discontinued the Ben Hogan line in 2008. By then, even a number of touring pros were playing with game improvement clubs, and the market for purists' clubs had waned. But Hogan irons retained their cachet. In 2010 you could look at the Blade Golf Irons site, dedicated to true blades, and find the Ben Hogan Apex Blade Irons ranked second on the list of best blades. BEN HOGAN 1972 FORGED APEX 2-9 irons, SI Wedge Forged IRON SET - 1972 Apex Irons - compact blade with slight bounce sole. Split level back with thick muscleback. Has Ben Hogan signature on back with BH logo (sunburst). The name Ben Hogan has been synonymous with uncompromising golf equipment since Mr. Hogan first put his name on a set of golf clubs in 1953. Since then, every model, every set, and every club has been held to the same rigorous standards of quality, craftsmanship and performance. Today that dedication extends to woods, irons, hybrids, wedges, golf balls and a full line of accessories. To learn more, visit us online at www.benhogan.com. Ben Hogan is a brand of the Callaway Golf Company. The shape of the 1972 Apex was not new at the time of its release—it’s basically the same head design as the Bounce Sole irons, which debuted in 1970. What makes this iron so iconic is the name “Apex”—this was the first! The Bounce Sole was iconic in its own way, because in this era of clubs the sole had more bounce and was much more cambered than other clubs on the market. Although Callaway owns the rights to the Apex (name thanks to the acquisition of Hogan assets when they purchased Spalding) and have rightfully done the name justice, classic gear buffs will always associate Apex with Ben Hogan. The most discussed feature of this head is the shifting weight pad to raise the CG and improve trajectory control. To me, this iron epitomizes Ben Hogan’s desire to create golf clubs to offer maximum control for players seeking precision instruments. Elements of this design are alive and well with some of the irons produced by National Custom Works. REVIEW:  " I love these vintage Ben Hogan irons. I’m talking the 1972 Apex specifically. It’s one of the most perfect shapes I’ve ever seen and they’re just pure. I can’t wait for the spring so I can get them out on the course and shoot a billion with them. The moral of this story is to think creatively with golf gear. Specifically with vintage clubs. Doing so could land you in some great deals and some real top pocket finds for your collection(s). My son-in-law once had a set of these irons and he foolishly sold them before he could really appreciate them, a move he regrets to this day. I have had these for about a year now and I can truthfully say, I have never played a finer club. Aside from the obvious esthetic superlatives you usually hear, the clubs just play beautifully. They are more forgiving than pure blades but work the ball very well. Mis-hits lose a little distance but not much. The feel of a solid hit with a forged club is just too sweet. As long as I put a good swing on the ball, I know I will not look up and be disappointed. If you can still find a set of these, do not walk out, get them. You will never regret it.
