Nice bit of Architectural iron detail probably from the first half to middle of the 20th century. Cast iron decorative Eagle decoration that was attached to a roof in colder climes. The purpose of an ice or snow guard is to prevent Snow or Ice from coming off your roof too fast and damaging the shingles or ripping your gutters off from the side of your house. New roofing techniques have replaced these guards. Still a decorative item with uses other than just sitting on your roof. They are decorative on their own merit and can be used as bookends, paperweights, or door stops to name a few. Black eagle is 5.25" tall - 6.25" wingspan and max depth is 2.5".
