Set of 2 Rubber Balls Rubber Cannon Balls for Cannon & Mortar This set of 2 rubber balls fit the Kilgore Firecracker Cannon & Mortar and also the Arcade Firecracker Cannon. The cannons have slightly tapered barrels. Rubber doesn't last long in the air or warmth or sunshine. Rubber degrades in a period of years. We came across a small milk crate of Kilgore Cannons and mortars and needed balls for them to be complete. We had these manufactured by a rubber ball company. They are the exact size to tamp into the barrel and the right elasticity to block the air pressure for a powerful shot. They have non-porous skin and the right bounce resiliency and the perfect size to work perfectly with the old Fire Cracker cannons. The minimum order for making custom rubber balls is substantial and we only needed a few dozen, so we are sharing our extras with other collectors. Eyeballing the ball, it looks like a little over 1  5/16 of an inch in diameter. The barrel is slightly tapered. At the outside rim (Inner Diameter) it is 1 3/8 of an inch. However, it tapers down. I can't measure it "Down in", So I took photos. The first one shows how far the ball will just drop in. The 2nd one shows the ball after I tamped it down in. It takes a substantial push to seat the ball down in so there is no air gap. It's tight. In the era that these cannons were made, the standard firecracker was about 50% larger in diameter. When I shoot my cannon, I wad up a little piece of wet newspaper to tuck around the gap between the breach hole and the firecracker. It shoots the ball about twice as far. If you wrap them in an airtight saran wrap and keep them dark, They will last for years. Play with one and store the other. The photo shows the cannon and mortar so you can see how they fit.
