Magnetite Granules *5 Pounds* Native Iron

Up for auction is a 5 POUND box of Iron Oxide granules. This is a naturally occurring material that has been painstakingly collected from dry stream beds near Iron mines in the Southern California desert. It has been purified by magnetic separation and is 99+% pure. It is actually Iron Oxide in composition (Magnetite). This is strongly attracted to a magnet and is 70% Iron by weight. I was running my forced air charcoal furnace one day and decided to toss in a few handfuls of this to see if I could reduce it to pure Iron. When it was cooled off I found that it had congealed into a chunk. I was curious if it was actually Iron or just the Iron Oxide that had clumped together. It was outside for a few weeks and I noticed that it rusted. Iron will rust but not the Oxide. I also found that it was electrically conductive when I tested its resistance with my Ohm meter. The ore is not conductive at all. Putting this material into the furnace was an afterthought as I was running it for other reactions that day but I intend to try to run it again to see if I can get liquid Iron in the furnace and try to pour it into a mold. Since this material comes from an abandoned Iron mining area I was curious to see if I could produce pure Iron from the ore. 1000 years ago only a few humans knew the secret of making Iron from ore and those who did were wealthy people as Iron was very useful for making pots, hinges, and weapons of course.
