Rare Westinghouse antique 100+ year old ceiling fan refinished as new. In 1972, after a trip to Asia during which I first noticed ceiing fans in the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore, I returned to the U.S. to investigate if they were available here.  I discovered that several companies manufactured them from the mid 1880s to the 1930s; they were commonly referred to as "Fly Fans", as their principal use here was over the entrances of stores and butcher counters to discourage flies.  The invention of air conditioning soon rendered them obsolete, and most were removed or fell into disrepair. Convinced that ceiling fans would find popularity in homes, not only as an efficient cooling/circulating device but as a decorative item as well, I scoured the older business districts of large cities and small towns for them, and in 1974 opened the PROPWASH VENTILATION COMPANY, specializing in their restoration.  At one time in the mid-1970s I had a stock of over a hundred of these treasures, discovered in the basements of five-and-dime stores, hanging broken and neglected from department store ceilings, or garthering dust in junkyards and scrap metal dealers. In 1974 Burton A. Burton had the same thought, but took it a step further, reproducing the fans using light-wieght materials and more efficient motors.  His Casablanca Fan Company offered a modern equivalent in scores of designs and became globally successful, and the demand for the heavier antique restorations soon fell dramatically.  Propwash Ventilation closed in 1979. This magnificent Westinghouse was one of the three fans featured in an article about the company published in the Los Angeles Times Home section September 14, 1975. NOTE:  Although all but a few of the fans in inventory have been sold, I will soon be clearing out a large stock of parts, including motor parts, blade holders, original switches and hardware, plated hanging rods, ceiling cups, hooks and hangers, and the like.  If you are looking for any ceiling fan items, feel free to contact me.
